AUGUST 2010 LECTURE SCHEDULE
Tuesday Evenings 7:00 to 8:30 pm

Edgework Training – Discovering the origins of dis-ease within your mind

The first Edgework Training session occurred on August 9 and the second session in this series on psychological healing will occur on Tuesday August 31st at 7:00.

In my book Edgework, I presented important principles for self-healing as well as for the prevention of illness.  I reviewed scientific research supporting these principles in order to create an understanding of their importance and validity.  Now is the time to make these principles a reality in your life.

If you are ill, these exercises will constitute a self-help psychological regimen that will enhance whatever other treatments you are receiving and improve your chances of recovery.  I believe that successful therapy for significant disease must entail elements of these processes. Often healing occurs when elements of these exercises are done naturally during the course of one's life.

Whether your interest is in prevention or healing, these exercises will help you explore your powerful and formative unconscious mind.  They will also assist you in transforming dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about yourself and the world around you.  They will help you honor your emotions and live a fuller and happier life with fewer tendencies toward illness in the future.

Here is the remaining Tuesday evening lecture schedule for August.

CHRONIC DISEASE – THE REAL AMERICAN EPIDEMIC
A CALL FOR MINDBODY MEDICINE

Chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and high blood pressure afflict about 200 million Americans and account for 75% of the $2.2 trillion spent on health care in America.  Doctors give expensive drugs to "manage" these illnesses, while medical research shows that they are caused by our lifestyle (diet, sedentary living, and smoking) as well as our mind style (chronic stress).

Extensive medical research as well as my 25 years of holistic medical practice has shown me that the best treatment for chronic illness is promoting the natural wisdom of the body using proper diet and nutrients, as well as herbs and medications as needed, along with exercise.  And, importantly, helping the patient to uncover the cause of disease in the mind and reduce stress.

Let’s look at some of the evidence, starting with heart disease.  Dr. Dean Ornish compared two similar groups of coronary artery disease patients over five years.  The first group was treated with a vegetarian diet, exercise training and stress reduction, while the second group received standard cardiology treatment, e.g. statin drugs.   The lifestyle group showed reduced coronary blockage by 8%, while the standard medical care group experienced increased coronary blockage by and average of 28%. (The Lifestyle Heart Trial, Lancet, July, 1990).  I am sure that the standard care group required more angiograms, coronary stents and bypass operations, as well as reduced quality of life compared to the lifestyle group.

FEELING EMOTIONS - A REQUIREMENT FOR HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

No one wants to suppress happiness, joy and love. And yet many hold in anger, sadness, tears and other, so called "negative emotions". Children are born knowing how to feel emotions; it is standard equipment at birth. But we are often taught early in childhood to break this natural mindbody release with dysfunctional beliefs such as "little girls shouldn’t be angry", and "boys shouldn’t cry". We go about our days numb to the pain in ourselves, our family, our society and our world. The pain moves into the body and we develop dis-ease.

However, emotions are the rich, vibrant part of life and they make life worth living. Indeed, the purpose of our work, relationships and life in general is to feel happy, excited, passionate, joyous and loved.

Emotion is e-motion, or, energy in motion. Like water, emotions need to flow. If they are damned up, then just like a stream flowing out of the mountains, they will disturb the terrain. You cannot suppress anger and tears and expect love and joy to flow naturally. All emotions are part of life. Releasing the painful ones is part of healing and enjoying the good ones is the purpose of life.

Indeed, your emotions are your personal, built-in, navigational system in life. Just as an automobile navigation system will take you to your destination, your emotions will guide you in finding happiness and fulfillment in your life.

GLUTEN SENSITIVITY AND CELIAC DISEASE: COMMON PROBLEM BUT HARD TO DIAGNOSE

Like many of my patients, Sally came to my office with medical problems that had propelled her on a long journey in the medical world looking for answers, but finding few.  She was a thin, healthy appearing women in her 70’s who complained of an aching headache, a "foggy feeling" in her mind, "numbness in her right leg and arm", as well a "rushing pressure feeling" in her chest. She also had a "burning" feeling in her stomach.  All of these problems were occurring with increasing frequency over the past five years.

She had seen a neurologist and was told that everything was normal.  She was hospitalized twice for the numbness in her extremities and chest pressure.  Again all of her tests were normal and she was reassured that her heart was okay and there was no evidence of stroke. An E.N.T. specialist had diagnosed gastroesophageal reflux disease and she was given an acid blocking medication. None of these treatments helped and she said that for the first time in her life she started to feel depressed and hopeless.

After listening to Sally’s story as well as her family history, I suspected gluten intolerance right away.

I confirmed the diagnosis with a fecal anti-gliaden antibody test and then started her on a gluten free diet along with the elimination of dairy, sweets and fruit.  I also gave her some nutritional supplements to improve digestion, provide mineral and antioxidant support to her body, along with Omega-3 fatty acids.

Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA)
Recently, there have been several changes to ADAAA (formally ADA). One significant change is in the definition of "Disability." ADAAA adds "Rules of Construction Regarding the Definition of 'Disability'"..."shall be construed in favor of broad coverage of individuals under this Act, to the maximum extent permitted by the terms of this Act."

The other important revision is the role of the supervisor. If employee issues regarding a disability, impairment or accommodation are discovered, supervisors need to have an interactive discussion about reasonable accommodation and thoroughly document  the conversation. These steps are vital in the success of the process.

Bottom Line: "Disability" Analysis is less important. The focus is more on the Duty to Interact to find Reasonable Accommodation.
